The Peace Columbarium - What Is It?
Peace Lutheran Church, Galion, Ohio

1. The columbarium is a respectful place set apart for deceased
Christians remains at Peace. It is often a vault or wall, with niches for
urns containing ashes of the Christian dead. The
Peace Columbarium is located in the attractively
decorated Chapel of the Resurrection, and open
Monday - Friday 8 - 4 p.m., Sundays and many
2. Why should I choose Peace's Columbarium for
myself or my family? Historically, Christians have
laid the dead to rest in churchyards where they
can be remembered and their remains safe
guarded. The columbarium is in keeping with
this tradition, to honor the memory of the deceased, and to provide a
tranquil, familiar final resting place for parishioners and their loved
ones.
3. What does it look like and where is it located? The columbarium is
located in the Chapel of the Resurrection. The all weather location is
easily accesable for the physically challenged. It is an attractive and
warmly designed handcrafted wooden wall with a stained glass
Resurrection window located in the center. Each handcrafted wooden
niche is approximately 8" x 8" x 12" within Peace Lutheran Church
Columbarium, and large enough to contain one urn.
4. Active members and contributors of record at Peace Lutheran
Church may acquire a niche. Due to space limitations, direct
connection with the Church is desirable.
5. Who is eligible for interment here? Parishioners eligible to purchase
a niche subscription (see above) and their designees in the Rules and
Procedures adopted by the Church Council are eligible for inurnment.
6. How much does a niche subscription cost? The price of the niche
is $600.00 for active communicant members.
7 What's the advantage to obtaining a niche subscription now, if I won't
need it for many years? By reserving a niche now you are taking a
considerable concern off your shoulders and those of your family,
having already provided for the disposal of his or her earthly remains
also assures the intent of the deceased.
8. Will there be extra costs at inurnment? Yes. An additional sum will
be assessed any time the niche is opened following the inurnment
service. The sum covers the costs of engraving on the face plate (with
name, birth and death dates) and opening and closing the niche. It will
not cover the cost of cremation nor the purchase of an urn or other
receptacle for cremains; these arrangements are to be made
separately through the funeral home of the subscriber's choice.
9. What if I buy a niche, then eventually decide to make arrangements
for burial or interment someplace else? If you discover that you do not
need the niche after you have purchased it, you must offer it first to
Peace Lutheran Church at your original purchased price. Then you may
offer it to other eligible parishioners.
10. There are a limited number of niches. How will Peace Lutheran
Church accommodate future generations who wish to be interred here?
In the experience of other columbaria in the area, this problem seems
to be more theoretical than real. Over the years, many parishioners will
decide to be buried or interred in family plots elsewhere. In the event
that demand is higher than expected, Peace Lutheran Church has room
to expand capacity in other parts of the property, without disturbing
current uses.
11. What about the funeral? At Peace Lutheran Church we treat the
cremains exactly as we do a casket for the funeral worship service. The
service may be in the sanctuary or a private inurnment in the Chapel of
the Resurrection, where the Peace Lutheran Columbarium is located. A
special pall (parament covers the cremains box) that is used.
Like other worship services the worship service is planned in
co-operation with the family and the deceased wishes, and in keeping
with church practices. There are various possibilities available to the
family
12. Will mourners have access to the columbarium outside of regular
church hours? (eg. on Saturdays or evenings?) No. For security
reasons, the Church will be closed, unless there are worship services,
and the normal church hours Monday-Friday which are published.
14. Plans include having a yearly All Saints Commemorative Worship
Service in the Chapel of the Resurrection on All Saints Day, November
1st each year.
13. Will mourners be allowed to leave flowers or other forms of
memorial at the foot of the columbarium? No flowers, plants, or other
decorations shall be placed in the columbarium area, except as
authorized by the Church. The use of fraternal seals, professional
designations, or similar inscriptions is expressly prohibited. The
church may remove and dispose of any unauthorized items found in the
columbarium area.
14. The columbarium is administered under the guidance of The
Resource and Outreach Ministry Team and Church Council.
15. Why doesn't the church convey an estate or tenancy in real estate
with a niche? It is not the intent of the church to convey or encumber
the title of the church property to all of the niche holders or heirs on a
subordinate agreement.
